TriCom Shares Results From Survey on Twin Cities IT Professionals

ST. LOUIS PARK, MN – JULY 28, 2025TriCom Technical Services, a leading staffing agency, has shared results from a three-question survey that aimed to discover what percentage of IT professionals in the Twin Cities work for a local company. According to a survey of 122 total participants, 65.81% (n = 77) of IT professionals in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro work for a company based in the greater Twin Cities area. The remaining percentage, 34.19% (n = 40) work for a company based outside of the Twin Cities. That figure includes companies outside of the Twin Cities and outside of the Midwest (21.37% or n = 25) companies outside of the Twin Cities metro but in the Midwest (10.26% or n = 12), and companies outside of the United States (2.56% or n = 3).

Other key findings include most respondents working in a full remote setting (31.93% or n = 38 work with no office visits expected). Hybrid (at least one day a week in office or one day a week from home, 31.09% or n = 37) and remote (with occasional office visits or 1-3 per month, 25.21% or n = 30) workers were close behind, followed by workers who are in the office five days a week (11.76% or n = 14).

Lastly, TriCom discovered that 42.50% (n = 51) of respondents found the ability to work remotely to be very important in their decision to accept a position. 28.33% (n = 34) said remote work was the most important consideration, 25.83% (n = 31) said it was somewhat important, and 3.33% (n = 4) said it was not important at all.

The survey ran from July 9 through July 27, and respondents were collated using TriCom’s internal database and filtered based on Minneapolis and St. Paul metropolitan area zip codes. Respondents were also invited to participate through a URL shared via LinkedIn. The first page of the survey included a disclaimer that the survey was intended only for IT professionals living in the Twin Cities metro, and the first question required respondents to input their zip code of residence for quality control purposes.

The reality is that top IT talent is no longer tethered to geography," said Matt Sharples, CEO of TriCom. "We're seeing 34% of the Minneapolis-St. Paul tech workforce take roles with companies outside the metro area because remote and hybrid models have opened doors to a larger pool of employers who offer a variety of things that are important for IT professionals. For local MSP employers, this means competing nationally for talent and rethinking what they offer to attract and retain the best.
