LEAWOOD, KS – JUNE 16, 2025 – TriCom Technical Services, a leading staffing agency, has shared results from a three-question survey that aimed to discover what percentage of IT professionals in Kansas City work for a local company. According to a survey of 667 total participants, 55.79% (n = 371) of IT professionals in the KC metro work for a company based in the greater KC area. The remaining percentage, 43.21% (n = 294) work for a company based outside of Kansas City. That figure includes companies outside of the Midwest (30.38% or n = 202) companies in the Midwest but not in the KC metro (13.23% or n = 88), and companies outside of the United States (0.6% or n = 4).
Other key findings include most respondents working in a hybrid setting (29.97% or n = 199 work at least one day a week in office or one day a week from home). Fully remote (with occasional office visits, 25.90% or n = 172) and full remote (no office visits expected, 25.75% or n = 171) workers were close behind, followed by workers who are in the office five days a week (18.37% or n = 122).
Lastly, TriCom discovered that 49.25% (n = 328) of respondents found the ability to work remotely to be very important in their decision to accept a position. 22.37% (n = 149) said remote work was the most important consideration, 22.22% (n = 148) said it was somewhat important, and 6.16% (n = 41) said it was not important at all.
The survey ran from May 20 through June 15, and respondents were collated using TriCom’s internal database and filtered based on Kansas City metropolitan area zip codes. Respondents were also invited to participate through a URL shared via LinkedIn. The first page of the survey included a disclaimer that the survey was intended only for IT professionals living in the Kansas City metro.
“We’ve experienced a considerable increase in friction lately in hiring tech professionals for several of our Kansas City clients,” said Matt Sharples, CEO of TriCom. “So, we wanted to first understand the KC-specific marketplace as it relates to building a local IT workforce.
“As we suspected, a whopping 43% of Kansas Citian IT pros aren’t even working for companies in the greater metro area.
“What this tells me is that workforce adaptability is of utmost importance right now. There are several contributing factors including the exponential pace of change, dramatic demographic shifts, and obviously the advent of AI and how that will affect the workforce.
“It will be incumbent on leadership at the C-Level to build out and implement strategies and road maps that address the changing nature of work, especially as it relates to building their internal IT orgs.”
