LEAWOOD, KS – DEC. 17, 2025 – TriCom Technical Services, a leading staffing agency, has shared results from a seven-question survey that aimed to discover how much Kansas City locality matters in IT hiring decisions. According to a survey of 137 total participants, 75% (n = 102) of IT hiring managers in the KC metro felt locality to KC matters. The remaining percentage, 25% (n = 34) did not think it matters.
However, 61% (n = 84) felt that KC locality was either extremely important or very important for their company.
Other key findings that nearly 60% (n = 81) either never or almost never hire people with no previous professional IT experience.
Additionally, about 40% (n = 54) of KC IT hiring managers reported just half or less than half of their team consisted of KC-area residents.
The following were the most common lowest entry-level IT positions at the respondents’ companies. These positions are visualized via the word cloud below. The most common roles reported were help desk technicians or similar titles such as IT support specialists or desktop technicians.
The survey ran from December 5 through December 17, and respondents were collated using TriCom’s internal database and filtered based on Kansas City metropolitan area zip codes. Respondents were also invited to participate through a URL shared via LinkedIn. The first page of the survey included a disclaimer that the survey was intended only for IT hiring managers who live in the KC metro and whose company is based in the KC metro. The first two questions disqualified anyone who did not live in the KC area and anyone whose company was not based in the KC area.
“The purpose of this survey was to understand what the KC IT talent community must contend with as we enter the back half of the 2020s," said Matt Sharples, CEO of TriCom. "Our survey found a significant share of KC IT Hiring Managers still utilizing a broad base of tech professionals who live outside the metro. This dovetails with our survey earlier this year which found a rather large subset of KC tech professionals working for companies not physically located in the KC area (around 43%).
"Today, AI and borderless hiring are erasing many true entry-level IT opportunities, forcing companies to fight over the same experienced technologists and driving up costs while starving the industry of new talent onramps."
